Amazon ElastiCache is a fully managed, in-memory caching service that helps you improve application performance by reducing the load on databases for read-heavy or session-based workloads.

Just as RDS manages relational databases, ElastiCache manages Redis and Memcached clusters — handling maintenance, patching, failure recovery, monitoring, and backups automatically.

What is a Cache?

A cache is an in-memory database that stores frequently accessed data temporarily to reduce access time.

Because it operates from memory (RAM) instead of disk, it provides extremely low latency and high throughput.

1. Query Result Caching

Your application checks ElastiCache first:

• If data exists (cache hit): Return directly from cache.
• If data doesn’t exist (cache miss): Fetch from RDS, then store in cache for future use.

This drastically reduces load on the database for repeated queries.
